Custom teardrop banner flags are one of the most effective ways for Australian businesses to stand out on a busy street, at a weekend market, or on a trade show floor. But walk into any print conversation without knowing your sizes and you are likely to end up with a flag that either disappears at the back of a crowd or overwhelms your narrow footpath space. This guide breaks down every size option available on our teardrop banner flags product page so you can order with confidence.

Teardrop banner flag sizes compared

Understanding the total assembled height, pole plus flag, is what matters most when planning your display. A size that looks generous in a product thumbnail can feel stubby on an open grassed event field, while a large flag can dominate and look awkward in a narrow cafe entry.

Paperlust Print Shop offers three standard heights for its teardrop banner flags:

Small (2.1 metres total height)

The small teardrop banner flag stands at 2100mm assembled. This is the right choice when ceiling height or physical space is limited, or when you want a professional-looking display that does not overpower an intimate environment. Common fits include:

  • Indoor trade show booths and exhibition stands
  • Reception counters and salon welcome areas
  • Narrow footpaths where a taller flag would block pedestrian flow
  • Secondary signage alongside an existing corflute or A-frame sign

At roughly head height plus a little extra, the small flag catches attention at the immediate point of contact without dominating a scene.

Medium (3.0 metres total height)

The medium option, at 3000mm, is the most popular choice for Australian small businesses. It has enough height to clear parked cars and outdoor furniture while remaining manageable for one person to assemble and reposition. You will find this size works well for:

  • Cafe and restaurant footpaths
  • Weekend markets and pop-up stalls
  • Retail shopfronts with standard awning clearance
  • Outdoor fitness studio entrances
  • Real estate open homes and auction days

The medium sits comfortably above street-level clutter and reads clearly from across the road, making it a strong all-rounder for general outdoor use.

Large (4.2 metres total height)

The large teardrop banner flag reaches 4200mm assembled, taller than most single-storey building fascias. It is designed for open spaces where you need visibility from a distance, or where nearby competing signage is dense. Prime applications include:

  • Outdoor festivals and community events with large crowds
  • Roadside activation sites and service station forecourts
  • Car yards and hardware stores with wide open frontage
  • Beachside markets and coastal event spaces

At 4.2 metres, the large flag is visible from a significant distance and can be spotted by drivers on a 60 km/h road. Assembly typically requires two people.

How to choose the right size

Indoor retail and exhibition spaces

Go small (2.1m). Most commercial premises have ceiling heights between 2.4 and 3 metres. The small flag fits comfortably, the assembled pole disassembles into sections for transport, and the footprint of a cross base or metal plate is minimal. A tear drop banner flag in a confined indoor space should direct, not dominate.

Shopfront and footpath use

Medium (3.0m) is the default answer here. It clears low outdoor umbrellas, sandwich boards, and planters. If your shopfront has a roller door or awning that comes down to around 2 metres, confirm clearance before ordering. The medium is also easy to position close to a facade wall without the tip of the flag catching on overhangs.

Outdoor markets and pop-up activations

Medium or large depending on stall density. At a busy weekend market with neighbouring stalls at similar height, a large (4.2m) flag lifts your brand above the visual noise. At a smaller artisan market with more space and lower competing signage, a medium is sufficient and easier to transport.

Roadside and high-traffic locations

Large (4.2m). Roadside signage needs to be legible at speed and from a distance. A large flag with a heavy-duty metal plate base or ground spike provides enough height and stability for roadside exposure. If your site is regularly exposed to wind, prioritise a ground spike over a cross base for maximum stability.

Bases and accessories

Every teardrop banner flag from Paperlust Print Shop ships with a carry bag included. The three base options cover the most common installation scenarios:

Ground spike. A pointed steel stake driven into soft ground (lawn, soil, garden beds). Ideal for outdoor events, real estate signage on verges, and open-air markets. Not suitable for hard concrete or pavement.

Premium cross base with water bag. A weighted, flat cross-shaped base that sits on any hard surface. Fill the water bag for added stability on busy footpaths or in light-to-moderate wind. Suitable for indoor and outdoor hard-floor use. This is the recommended base for shopfront footpath placements on concrete.

Heavy-duty metal plate (5kg). A solid steel plate base, best for locations where maximum stability matters, such as windy outdoor sites or high-traffic indoor areas where the flag may be brushed by foot traffic. The metal plate does not require filling or inflation.

All base types are compatible with all three flag sizes.

Artwork and print area by size

Resolution and bleed

All three sizes require artwork submitted at a minimum of 150dpi at the final print size. Keep a 5mm bleed on all edges, and keep critical content, logos, and text at least 20mm from any edge so nothing is lost in the hem seam.

As a general rule, any text that needs to be readable from 5 metres or more should be set at a minimum of 80pt. Scale this up for the large flag where viewers may be reading from 15 to 25 metres away.

Single-sided vs double-sided

Single-sided flags are printed on 125gsm trilobal fabric. The print is vivid and vibrant when the flag is front-on, but light will pass through the fabric from behind. If your flag will be positioned against a wall or fence (so the back is never seen), single-sided is the more affordable choice.

Double-sided flags use 145gsm blockout fabric with a dark interlining layer between the two printed faces, which prevents bleed-through. The result is a clean, fully readable flag from both sides. This option is important for flags positioned in open space where foot traffic or vehicles approach from multiple angles, such as at a market, open event, or near a roundabout.

When preparing double-sided artwork, note that each side is printed as a mirror image of the other so that both faces read correctly. Your print-ready files should account for this. The Paperlust team will confirm artwork orientation during the proof stage.

Frequently asked questions

What is the total height of each teardrop banner flag including the pole?

The three sizes assembled with their poles are: small at 2.1 metres (2100mm), medium at 3.0 metres (3000mm), and large at 4.2 metres (4200mm). These are the full assembled heights including the pole sections. Flag fabric dimensions are a subset of these totals.

Which size is best for an outdoor market stall?

The medium (3.0 metres) is the most popular choice for market stalls. It clears neighbouring stalls and signage, is visible from the end of a market row, and is straightforward to transport and assemble solo. If you are at a very large event with dense competing signage, consider the large (4.2 metres) for additional height advantage.

Can I use a teardrop banner flag indoors?

Yes. The small size (2.1 metres) is specifically suited to indoor use in standard commercial premises. Use a cross base or metal plate base rather than a ground spike for hard floor surfaces. Confirm the ceiling height at your venue before ordering, the assembled flag needs 2.2 metres of clearance minimum.

What is the difference between single-sided and double-sided flags?

Single-sided flags are printed on lighter trilobal fabric; light passes through from behind, so the reverse side shows a faint mirror image. Double-sided flags use a heavier blockout fabric with a centre layer that prevents bleed-through, so both faces display the artwork cleanly. Choose double-sided if your flag will be seen from multiple angles.

What base should I use for a concrete footpath?

The cross base with water bag is the recommended option for hard-surface footpath use. Fill the water bag (typically 8 to 10 litres) to add weight and resist wind. The heavy-duty metal plate is an alternative if you want a fixed-weight solution without filling.

How quickly can I receive my teardrop banner flags?

Production takes 2 to 3 business days after artwork approval. Delivery time depends on your location and the shipping method selected at checkout. Paperlust ships Australia-wide.

What resolution does my artwork need to be?

Submit artwork at a minimum of 150dpi at the final flag size, with 5mm bleed on all edges and critical content kept 20mm from edges. For detailed guidance your artwork file should be PDF, AI, or a high-resolution PNG.

Ready to order your teardrop banner flags?

Choosing the right size comes down to three things: where the flag will be used, how far away your audience will be, and whether you need visibility from one direction or all around. The small is built for indoor and tight outdoor spaces; the medium is the reliable all-rounder for shopfronts and markets; the large is your best option when you need height and long-range visibility at events or roadside sites.
