Is A4 really a poster?
Honestly, it depends on what you mean by poster.
A4 is everywhere in Australian offices, schools, and shops. When someone searches for an A4 poster, they usually want one of a few things: a staff noticeboard notice, a table tent or counter card, a printed menu, a window sign for a small shopfront, or a handout with a promotional design. All of these are legitimate uses of A4 print, but most of them are better described as flyers or notices than posters.
A poster, in the traditional sense, is designed to be seen from a distance, to grab attention, and to communicate a single message quickly. At A4, that is hard to pull off outside of very short reading distances. The format works well when the viewer is standing close to the wall or looking directly at a counter. It struggles anywhere the viewer is more than about two metres away.
That distinction matters when you are choosing a format, because the right answer to “I want an A4 poster” is often a different product rather than a smaller version of the same thing.
When A4 works well
A4 is a sensible choice in several situations.
Internal noticeboards

Short-run handouts
If you need something that works both as a handout and a pin-up, A4 is the standard. Real-estate open-home flyers, event programmes, and community notices designed to be taken away and read at home are all natural A4 formats.
When A4 falls short
A4 begins to fail as a poster once the reading distance extends.
More than two metres away. At two metres, standard 12pt body text is essentially illegible. At A4, even a 24pt headline is small by the time a viewer is standing across a room. If you need a poster to pull someone in from the other side of a corridor, a cafe, or a retail floor, A4 is working against you.
Busy retail environments. In a shop with product displays, signage, and competing visual noise, an A4 notice disappears. A3 or A2 is the minimum size for a retail promotional poster expected to compete for attention.
Outdoors. Wind, rain, and viewing distance make A4 impractical outdoors before weather resistance is even considered. An A4 sheet in a window facing a footpath often reads as decoration rather than communication when pedestrians are moving past.
Anywhere you need brand impact. A well-printed A3 poster has a physical presence that A4 cannot replicate. For a product launch, an event, or a retail promotion, going up in size is almost always the right call.

At A4, the safe territory for display is arm’s length to about one metre. Beyond that, you are designing a poster that requires the viewer to walk up to it, which removes most of the advantage of making it a poster rather than a handout.
Keep layouts simple at A4: one headline, one supporting line, one clear call to action or contact detail. Busy designs at A4 are harder to scan than at A3 because there is less physical space to give each element room.
