Boat Registration Numbers

Boat Registration Numbers are cut vinyl registration numbers for boats, jet skis and personal watercraft, set into a state rego layout with the buyer's own number, plus boat name layouts or the buyer's own artwork. The letters are cut from Avery vinyl and arrive pre-spaced on transfer tape, ready to apply. We cut the numbers; an official registration label is not supplied here.

On the Upload Artwork step after Add to cart, type the exact characters from your registration certificate or your boat name. Our team sets the text into the layout and emails a PDF proof before any cutting. Choose Upload my own artwork to send artwork you already have, or Custom design for a Paperlust designer to create the lettering from your brief, with two design options and three rounds of revisions.

You choose a character height, Pair or Single piece, and a colour. Heights on offer are 75mm, 100mm, 150mm and 200mm across the state and boat name layouts. The Western Australia layout is Black only and is for white hulls. The state needs a white surround of at least 7mm on a hull that is not white. We do not make that white surround version. The letters have no background, so the hull colour shows between and inside each character.

Frequently Asked Questions
How high do boat registration numbers need to be in New South Wales?

In New South Wales, powerboats need numbers at least 150mm high on both sides. Sailing boats and PWC need numbers at least 100mm high, and a sailing boat can show them on the transom. The numbers should be solid, clear, uppercase and in a colour that contrasts with the hull.

What does Queensland require for boat rego numbers?

Queensland requires numbers to be readable from 30m away and to contrast with the hull. Boats that can plane need numbers at least 150mm high on both sides, boats that cannot plane need at least 75mm high on both sides or on the stern, and PWC need at least 100mm high on both sides.

What is the Western Australia black number and white surround rule, and which layout should I choose?

Western Australia requires every number and letter in black, plain block font, upright and not slanting. If the hull is not white, each character needs a white surround of at least 7mm. Choose the Western Australia rego layout for a white hull. We do not make the white surround version, so our numbers alone do not meet the rule on a hull that is not white.

What height does a jet ski or PWC registration number need?

Jet ski and PWC rules vary by state. In New South Wales and Queensland the requirement is at least 100mm high, Victoria and Western Australia also allow 100mm high, and Tasmania allows 75mm. Choose the Jet ski and PWC rego layout in 100mm or 150mm characters and check your state's current rule.

Does this page supply the government registration label or sticker?

No. We cut the registration numbers as vinyl decals. We do not supply the government registration label or sticker; Victoria and Western Australia still issue those, while New South Wales and Queensland no longer do.

What do I type after I add the layout to the cart?

After you add the layout to the cart, open the Upload Artwork step. Use the text box for your number or the boat name, entering the characters exactly as they appear on the registration certificate. Our team sets them into the layout before emailing a PDF proof. You can also add the details later from the cart.

Does a pair cover both sides of the boat?

Yes. A pair includes one decal for each side of the boat. Choose Single piece when you only need a transom or stern set, or when you are replacing one side.

Will a long boat name or a 200mm number come in one piece?

The largest single piece is 600 x 260mm. A 150mm registration number of up to six characters fits one piece per side, while 200mm numbers and longer boat names are supplied as two pieces per side that you align on the hull. The home port line is its own piece.

Which colours last longest outdoors?

Black and White last up to 5 years outdoors. The other standard gloss colours last up to 3 years outdoors.

What does a pair of 150mm numbers and standard delivery cost?

A pair of 150mm numbers, one for each side, is $59 inc GST. Standard delivery is $15 per order.

State rego layouts cut to the right height

  • New South Wales rego layout: 150mm or 200mm characters, for New South Wales registration numbers on both sides or the transom.
  • Victoria rego layout: 150mm or 200mm characters, for Victorian registration numbers on both sides of the hull.
  • Queensland rego layout: 150mm or 200mm characters, for Queensland registration numbers.
  • Western Australia rego layout: black only, 150mm or 200mm characters, for white hulls.

  • Tasmania rego layout: 150mm or 200mm characters, for Tasmanian registration numbers.
  • Jet ski and PWC rego layout: 100mm or 150mm characters, for jet skis and personal watercraft.

State minimum heights and display rules

These cut number decals are often called boat registration stickers, but they are not the government label.

  • New South Wales: the number sits on both sides, or on the transom of a sailing boat, well above the normal waterline so it stays visible, in solid, clear uppercase numerals that contrast with the hull. Powerboats need at least 150mm high; sailing boats and PWC need at least 100mm.
  • Queensland: characters must be readable from 30m away and contrast with the hull. Boats that can plane need at least 150mm on both sides; boats that cannot plane need at least 75mm on both sides or on the stern; PWC need at least 100mm on both sides.
  • Victoria: place the identification mark on both sides of the hull, forward of midships, at least 150mm high, in a contrasting colour. PWC marks can be 100mm. The registration label is still fixed in an obvious position on the vessel.
  • Western Australia: every number and letter is black, in a plain block font, upright and not slanting. If the hull is not white, each character needs a white surround of at least 7mm. Motor boats need at least 150mm tall and 25mm wide on both sides; PWC need at least 100mm tall and 25mm wide on both sides, not under the flare of the bow. The registration sticker goes on the port side next to the number.
  • Tasmania: boats that plane need numbers 150mm high on each side. Boats that do not plane need at least 75mm high on each side or on the stern. PWC numbers can be 75mm.

South Australia sets its own heights by the boat's length, and buyers check the South Australian rules for their boat before ordering.

Before ordering, check your registration certificate and your state's current rules.

The layouts follow each state's listed heights but are not legal advice.

Boat name layouts for hull and transom

Add a boat name in cut vinyl with the same pre-spaced application tape.

  • Script boat name layout: 100mm or 150mm capitals.
  • Classic block capitals: 75mm, 100mm or 150mm.
  • Sport italic capitals: 75mm or 100mm.
  • Boat name and home port layout: script name at 100mm or 150mm with the home port in block capitals underneath, the port line 40 percent of the name height and never under 30mm.

Script and italic styles are for boat names only; registration numbers stay upright. Every letter is at least 20mm tall and every stroke at least 5mm thick at its thinnest point; this is why the Script layouts start at 100mm. If the lettering is not for a boat, see our vinyl lettering for windows, walls, vehicles and other surfaces.

How ordering and artwork options work

Pick a layout, character height, Pair or Single piece and a colour, then add to cart. On the Upload Artwork step, type the registration number exactly as it appears on the registration certificate, or the boat name. Our team sets the text into the layout and emails a PDF proof, and nothing is cut until you approve the proof. A layout costs the same as supplying your own artwork for the same size. Upload my own artwork uses a cut-ready vector file in PDF, SVG or AI format, checked by our team at the proof stage. Custom design lets a Paperlust designer create the lettering from your brief, with two design options on the first proof and three rounds of revisions for a one-off design fee. Choose Pair for one set for each side of the hull, or Single piece for a transom or stern or to replace one side. The largest single piece is 600 x 260mm; a 150mm registration number of up to six characters fits one piece per side, while 200mm numbers and longer boat names are supplied as two pieces per side, which you align on the hull. The home port line is its own piece.

Colours, vinyl and application

Choose from ten standard gloss colours: Black, White, Dark Grey, Red, Orange, Yellow, Kelly Green, Light Blue, Reflex Blue and Magenta. Western Australia layouts are Black only. The Gold, Rose Gold and Silver metal-effect films are not offered on this page because they are better suited to indoor and sheltered outdoor use. The letters are cut from Avery 500 series 70 micron gloss calendered vinyl with a permanent adhesive, hand weeded and supplied pre-spaced on transfer tape. Standard colours last up to 3 years outdoors, and Black and White last up to 5 years. Apply the letters above the waterline on a clean, dry, smooth painted or gelcoat hull panel. They cannot be repositioned once they touch the surface and are single-use; a piece damaged during application can be reordered on its own at the single-piece price. For printed full colour boat graphics and logos, see our vinyl stickers.

Prices, production and delivery

All prices are in Australian dollars and include GST. A pair of 75mm characters is $35, a pair of 100mm characters is $45, a pair of 150mm characters is $59, and a pair of 200mm characters is $69. A single piece at 150mm is $33. Two pairs at 150mm are $106.20. The configurator prices every other combination of height, quantity, pair or single piece and colour. Made to order production takes 3 to 5 working days after the proof is approved, which is not delivery time. Standard delivery is $15 per order, or express delivery is $60 per order, Australia wide.
