Construction Site Signage: Durable Signs for Australian Building Sites

Construction signs on corflute (fluted polypropylene) are the standard signage format for Australian building sites, civil works and temporary public infrastructure. Corflute is inherently weatherproof, impact-resistant and printable in full colour for high-legibility safety and regulatory content. Corflute is a corrugated polypropylene board with a smooth face on each side. The fluted internal structure gives the board strength and rigidity while keeping the overall weight low, which is important on sites where signs are handled, repositioned, and moved between locations regularly. The 3mm thickness is the industry standard for most construction site signage applications; 5mm provides increased stiffness for large-format boards and locations with exposure to sustained wind.

Polypropylene does not absorb water. Unlike paper-based or cardstock substrates, corflute does not warp, soften, or delaminate when wet. This makes it reliable through rain events without the sign degrading mid-project. UV resistance extends the print life through extended outdoor exposure typical of multi-week or multi-month construction projects.

Corflute also handles the physical contact common on active sites. Minor impacts from equipment, tools, and passing personnel do not crack or split the board. When a sign is damaged beyond use, it can be replaced at low cost, and the affordability of the format makes periodic replacement practical for large site signage programs.

Aluminium composite panel signs are built from two 0.21mm aluminium skins over a recycled polyethylene core, printed in full colour on one side with a gloss laminate. The 3mm board is offered in 600 x 900mm, 900 x 600mm and 900 x 1200mm, so a wide fence panel or hoarding can use the landscape-oriented 900 x 600mm board without changing the price.

The printed face is rated for up to 5 years outdoors, and the panel itself carries a 10 year warranty from the maker. Mounting hardware is not included; choose the 4 Drilled Corner Holes option if you want four supplier-drilled holes ready for your own fixings.

ACM is made to order by our supplier in 5 to 7 business days after the design proof is approved, then ships by standard delivery only. Choose this board when the sign needs to stay up for a long job, such as a multi-stage build or a development that will be on display for months, where corflute would show wear sooner.

Construction signs are available in four standard sizes:

• 600 x 450mm: The closest standard size to A2, with similar area and able to run landscape or portrait. Suited to pedestrian-area hazard notices, information boards, and subcontractor identification.
• 600 x 900mm: The most popular standard size, slightly larger than A1, so it covers every A1 job. Common for PPE requirement notices, exclusion zone markers, and directional signage at access points.
• 900 x 600mm: The 600 x 900mm board turned on its side for a wide fence panel or hoarding in landscape. Runs the same jobs as 600 x 900mm when the space is wider than it is tall.
• 900 x 1200mm: The large-format standard for site-entry safety boards and regulatory compliance signs.

Aluminium and the fill-in layouts are available from 600 x 900mm and up.

Signs in 3mm corflute (fluted polypropylene) install into standard H-frame sign holders, cable-tie to chainmesh fencing, hoarding, and temporary barriers, or slot into corflute A-frame holders. The 5mm option provides enough self-support for use in sign holders without additional bracing in most wind conditions. Corflute can be drilled and fixed with your own fixings without splitting the board. Aluminium takes the 4 Drilled Corner Holes option, which gives you four holes ready for your own fixings. Mounting hardware is not included.

Corflute construction signs suit any site or project where outdoor safety, compliance, and hazard communication are required and signage must withstand weather and physical site conditions. Common applications include:

Builder signage tends to arrive as one of three jobs, and all three run through the same process:

• New site set-up: a full set of builders signs going up at once, usually a large site-entry board plus PPE and hazard signs at each access point. Order the entry board at 900 x 1200mm and the supporting signs at 600 x 900mm or 600 x 450mm.
• Replacement boards: single signs damaged or faded mid-project. Construction signs can be ordered in small quantities, including single signs, so a replacement does not need a minimum run.
• Multi-site rollouts: the same artwork printed for several active sites, with only the site address or contact panel changing. Send the list of sites with your enquiry and the team can quote it as one job.

Because print is full colour across the whole board, hazard symbols, safety pictograms, regulatory text, licence and permit numbers and your company logo all sit on the one sign at no extra cost. High-visibility backgrounds including safety yellow, orange, and red print at full saturation on the corflute face.

Artwork comes in as PDF (preferred), SVG, and Adobe Illustrator files with 3mm bleed. Most construction sites run more than one kind of board, and they are not interchangeable. The three sizes on this page map onto them directly.

• Project sign board (company signboard): the board at the site entrance carrying the principal contractor name, licence or permit number and a contact number. This is the one that needs to be read from the footpath or the road, so 900 x 1200mm is the size to order. Keep the contact number the largest element after the company name.
• Site notice board: the information board inside the site, typically in the shed or amenities area, holding site rules, emergency contacts, the site plan and current notices. 600 x 450mm suits a board people read standing in front of it; 600 x 900mm is the size for a larger board.
• Mandatory and PPE boards: hard hat, high-visibility and safety footwear requirements at every entry point. 600 x 900mm is the workhorse size here because it reads at walking pace from several metres.
• Subcontractor identification boards: trade name and contact details for each subcontractor on site. 600 x 450mm is the usual choice, and single signs can be ordered as trades come and go.

On construction sign board design, the two things that decide whether a board works are contrast and hierarchy. Dark text on a light ground or white text on a saturated safety colour both read well outdoors; mid-tone on mid-tone does not. Put the single most important line at the top at roughly twice the size of the body text, and resist filling the board edge to edge, because white space is what makes the top line findable at distance.

What a project signboard or site notice board is required to display varies by state and by the conditions attached to your development consent. AS 1319 (Safety signs for the occupational environment) governs the safety sign categories; the project and notice board content usually comes from your state regulator and your consent conditions. • Site entry layout has space for a logo and company name, a danger panel reading CONSTRUCTION SITE and AUTHORISED PERSONS ONLY, the five mandatory PPE symbols, the line ALL VISITORS MUST REPORT TO THE SITE OFFICE, and the principal contractor details model WHS regulation 308 lists: name, phone numbers including after hours and site office location.

• Victoria builder layout follows Building Regulations 2018, regulation 41. It has space for the registration numbers and contact details of the builder and the relevant building surveyor, the building permit number and date of issue, and the logo and company name at the top.

• New South Wales builder layout follows Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation 2021, section 70, and Home Building Regulation 2014, clause 32. It has fields for the principal certifier name, address and phone, the principal contractor name and outside working hours phone, and prints "unauthorised entry to the work site is prohibited". For residential building work that needs development consent it also carries the licensee name as on the contractor licence, the words licensed contractor and the contractor licence number.

• Queensland QBCC layout has fields for the licensee name as on the QBCC licence, the licence number and a reference to the QBCC Act. The name and number are set up to print 50mm high or larger on a sign larger than half a square metre, as the QBCC asks.

• Owner-builder layout prints an OWNER-BUILDER heading, the owner-builder's name, a phone number and the permit or approval number. It covers Queensland, where the QBCC asks owner-builders to show the permit number, and Western Australia, where regulation 27 asks for a name, contact phone and owner-builder approval number.

• Logo board layout is a branding board for fencing and hoarding, not a legal sign. It has space for a large logo, company name, phone number, website and licence number.

• Western Australia builder layout follows Building Services (Registration) Regulations 2011, regulation 21. It has fields for the building contractor's registered name and registration number, a contact phone number, and the nominated supervisor's name and registration number. The regulator says a trading name alone, without the registered name, does not meet the rule.

• South Australia builder layout follows Building Work Contractors Act 1995, section 51, as the regulator explains it. It carries the contractor's name as it appears on the licence or a notified registered business name, and the licence number, which starts with BLD.

• ACT building notice layout follows Building (General) Regulation 2008, section 30A and is formatted for a sign at least 600 x 900mm. It prints "Notice about building work" in bold at least 50mm high and has fields for the builder's and certifier's names, licence numbers, phone numbers and ACN, the street address, the block, section and division, a description of the work and the development approval details.

• Danger construction site layout is a fixed wording sign with a DANGER heading, CONSTRUCTION SITE, KEEP OUT and AUTHORISED PERSONS ONLY. There is nothing to type.

• Asbestos removal layout is a fixed wording sign with a DANGER heading, ASBESTOS REMOVAL IN PROGRESS and UNAUTHORISED PERSONS KEEP OUT. Model WHS regulation 469 asks an asbestos removalist to place signs alerting people to asbestos where removal work is carried out, and this layout prints that alert wording with no details to type.

Set-up is $15 per design on top of the own artwork price for the same sign, for example one 600 x 900mm 3mm one sided corflute sign is $54 with a fill-in layout and $39 with own artwork. Corflute production is 24 hours for orders of 1 to 3 signs in our standard sizes and for orders of up to 10 signs in our standard sizes picked up from Oakleigh South, and 48 hours for delivered orders of 4 or more signs, for any order of more than 10 signs, and for 900 x 1200mm signs at any quantity, all after design proof approval. Aluminium composite panel signs take 5 to 7 business days after design proof approval, with delivery on top for all. What follows is the set most new building sites order at once, with the size that suits each job. Everything here prints on 3mm or 5mm corflute in four sizes, including the 900 x 600mm landscape board, or on 3mm aluminium composite panel from 600 x 900mm.

• Site entry board, 900 x 1200mm. The principal contractor board at the gate carrying company name, contact number and permit or licence details. This is the only board on a building site that has to be read from the footpath or the road, so it takes the largest format.
• PPE and mandatory signs, 600 x 900mm. Hard hat, high-visibility and safety footwear requirements at each access point. 600 x 900mm reads at walking pace from several metres, which is what these need to do.
• Hazard and warning boards, 600 x 450mm or 600 x 900mm. Site-specific risks: excavation, overhead work, plant movement, live services. Order these last, once the site walk has told you what the actual hazards are.
• Site notice board, 600 x 450mm. The information board in the shed or amenities area holding site rules, emergency contacts and current notices. This size also suits a smaller crew or a second location.
• Subcontractor identification, 600 x 450mm. Trade name and contact details for each trade on site. There is no minimum order, so these can be added one at a time as trades come and go.
• Directional boards, 600 x 450mm. Deliveries entrance, site office, visitor parking, first aid and muster point. Larger building sites need more of these than most people plan for.

Order two or three spares of the mandatory safety signs while the job is on press. They are the boards most often knocked off fencing or damaged by plant, and a replacement ordered later costs more in delay than it does in printing.

Building site signage requirements are set by your state or territory work health and safety regulator and by the conditions attached to your development consent, not by the printer. One is a board that carries the company name for the life of the project. The other is a permanent sign on a finished building. Most of what a building company orders on this stock is custom building signs, and each one has to stay readable in weather and full sun. A principal contractor board carries the company's name, a phone number, and the relevant permit and licence reference. Building company signs on hoarding or temporary fencing keep the brand visible from the street. Commercial building signs on this board are project announcements and developer boards that tell the neighbourhood what is coming. A business building sign at the entry works as a wayfinding cue for subcontractors and deliveries. Building advertising signs do the same job: they promote the builder while the project is active, then they come down.

On a company or contractor board, the details that usually appear include:

• Company name, permit or licence number, and a contact phone number
• Company branding across hoarding and temporary fencing
• Project name or developer announcement text
• Subcontractor identification details
• Directional instructions
• Hazard, warning and mandatory PPE messages

If the project is complete and the sign needs to stay fixed to a wall for years, corflute (fluted polypropylene) is not the right material. The 3mm aluminium composite panel on this page is the longer lasting choice, with print rated up to 5 years outdoors. A permanent exterior identification panel is a job for PVC signs, and indoor reception or architectural wayfinding is better on acrylic reception panels.

Construction signs in corflute cover the core safety and compliance signage needs on Australian worksites. For car park management, public space, and pedestrian zone signage where existing bollards are in place, bollard signs provide 360-degree visibility without a separate frame. For roadside and site-entry freestanding signage, corflute A-frames offer a frameless folding option made from one scored TEKflute sheet, while A-frame signs use a black powder-coated steel frame with 5mm corflute panels that slide in and print in full colour on both faces.
