Frequently Asked Questions
What should a builder put on a business card?

Start with your name and the business name you trade under, then add the phone number people can call or text. Next comes the licence or registration line your state asks for, plus an ABN where it helps. Follow with the services you cover, such as new homes, renovations and extensions, carpentry and joinery, cabinet making or commercial work, then the area you work and a QR code to a quote form, booking page or review page.

Do builders need their licence number on a business card in Queensland or New South Wales?

In Queensland, the QBCC requires advertising by a licensed contractor to show the licensed name, a note that the holder is authorised under the QBCC Act, and the licence number, with each part easy to read and reasonably prominent. The QBCC includes business cards in its definition of advertising, and a QBCC licence is required for building work over $3,300. In New South Wales, Fair Trading expects the licensee's name and licence number in all advertising for licensed building and trade work. Residential building work over $5,000 including GST needs a contractor licence.

Do builders need their registration number on a business card in Victoria or Western Australia?

Victoria's Building Act 1993 says a registered building practitioner who advertises or offers domestic building work in writing must state the registered name and registration number. The VBA treats plain business cards differently, so that number is not automatically required on every card. In Western Australia, the Building Services (Registration) Act 2011 requires a registered building service contractor to include its registration number in any advertising for its building services. If your situation sits outside those examples, check with the regulator.

Which card suits a builder?

Standard Business Cards are the practical default at 90 x 55 mm, printed one side or both on 300 GSM stock in Matte, Linen, Cotton or Metallic, or on 450 GSM Artboard with Velvet Laminate. Coloured Paper Business Cards use stock from 270 GSM Black or Navy and 290 GSM Kraft to 300 GSM in Forest Green, Hunter Green, Burgundy and Cream, among other shades. Raised Foil Business Cards add gold, silver or rose gold foil you can feel. A layout built for Standard also runs on Rounded Corner and Recycled cards.

Can I match my site signs and car magnets to the card?

Yes. Use the same business name, phone number, licence line and colours on your Construction Signs, Car Magnets and card. A yard sign at the site entrance or a ute door will read as the same business, and a card can stay lighter on detail while the sign holds the bigger message.

What builder business cards need to show

Builder business cards in this gallery are made for commercial builders, cabinet makers, carpenters and joiners, and for the new homes, renovations and extensions they take on. Most layouts leave room for a QR code. On construction business cards, readers generally scan the details in this order.

  • Your own name and the business name you trade under, with the trade named plainly.
  • The phone number, because most quotes start with a call or text rather than a website visit.
  • The licence or registration line your state's rules require, plus an ABN where it helps.
  • The services you cover: new homes, renovations and extensions, commercial work, carpentry and joinery, cabinet making.
  • The area you work, from a few suburbs to the council regions you service.
  • A QR code that goes to a quote form, booking page or review page.

Licence and registration numbers by state

Licence rules sit with each state and territory, and they do not all read the same way. Confirm your own class against the list below before the details go on a card.

  • Queensland (QBCC): when a licensed contractor advertises, the card must show the licensed name, a note that the holder is authorised under the QBCC Act, and the licence number, with each part easy to read and reasonably prominent. The QBCC counts business cards as advertising, and a QBCC licence is needed for building work valued over $3,300.
  • New South Wales (Fair Trading): any ad for licensed building or trade work must carry the licensee's name and licence number. Residential building work over $5,000 including GST needs a contractor licence.
  • Victoria (Building Act 1993): a registered practitioner offering or advertising domestic building work in writing must include their registered name and registration number. Since the VBA handles plain business cards separately, do not assume every card needs that number.
  • Western Australia (Building Services (Registration) Act 2011): any ad for building services by a registered contractor must show the registration number.
  • ACT (Construction Occupations (Licensing) Act 2004): a licensed builder's advertisements need the name on the licence and the licence number, and the Act names a business card and vehicle signage as examples.

On the ABN side, ASIC expects a company to show its name and ACN, or ABN if it contains the ACN, on invoices, receipts, orders and letterhead, but business cards are not on that required list. The ATO notes an ABN on stationery is wise when you supply another business, because it can remove the need for that business to withhold tax. We found no rule that forces a sole trader to print an ABN on a card. If you work in a state or territory not covered, or your licence class is unusual, confirm with the relevant building regulator before printing.

Which card suits a builder

The layouts across this page are grounded first in Standard, with Coloured Paper, Duplex, Raised Foil, Flat Foil, Spot UV and Recycled following. Each shows its front and back in several colourways.

Standard Business Cards are the practical default: 90 x 55 mm, single or double sided, on 300 GSM Matte, Linen, Cotton or Metallic, or 450 GSM Artboard with Velvet Laminate. The four 300 GSM boards come without laminate.

Coloured Paper Business Cards get colour from the board itself, from 270 GSM Black or Navy and 290 GSM Kraft to 300 GSM in Forest Green, Hunter Green, Burgundy and Cream, among other shades, printed in CMYK or white ink.

Raised Foil Business Cards add raised gold, silver or rose gold foil you can feel, on 450 GSM Artboard with Velvet Laminate. They suit a builder who hands out fewer cards and wants the first impression to hold.

If a layout starts on Standard Business Cards, you can also set it onto Rounded Corner Business Cards or Recycled Business Cards. Artwork tied to a finish or stock stays on its own card, and many of those can still run as a flat standard edition on Standard Business Cards.

From ready design to approved proof

Choose a ready design here or in the business card designs collection. It opens with print options selected and marked Recommended, and you can change any of them. Add to cart and enter your name, business name, phone, email and the licence and registration numbers your state calls for, plus your ABN where it helps. We email a free PDF proof within one to two business days, and nothing prints before you approve it. Ready layouts carry no set-up charge. If you switch shape or orientation we adapt the layout in-house at no cost and show the result in the proof. On coloured stock the ink stays matched to your chosen colourway. For direct design changes or a card from your own logo, use the Custom Design service. Cards are printed in Melbourne.

Match the card to the site and the ute

Keep the same business name, phone number, licence line and colours across everything, so a yard sign and a van door read as the same business. A Construction Signs page sign works at the site entrance or yard fence, and Car Magnets turn a ute or van door into moving advertising. Use the print marketing kit for tradies to plan the broader kit, then match fonts and colours rather than overloading each piece.

PROOF BEFORE PRINTING

Every ready design includes a free PDF proof. No job starts printing before you approve the proof.

Cards are produced in Melbourne, and a ready layout has no set-up charge.
