Frequently Asked Questions
Do plumbers need their licence number on a business card in Australia?

Rules differ by state. NSW: Fair Trading requires licensee name and number in all advertising. QLD: QBCC requires licensed name, a statement that you are licensed under the QBCC Act, licence number; business cards count as advertising. ACT: licensed name and licence number. WA and SA: check with Building and Energy or Consumer and Business Services what your card must show. Vic: no confirmed rule, check with VBA or Building and Plumbing Commission. Elsewhere, check your plumbing regulator.

What should a plumber put on a business card?

Start with your name or business name and what you do, then keep the phone number prominent. Add the licence or registration number where your state requires it on advertising, and include your ABN where it helps, especially for quoting other businesses. List only the services you actually cover, such as hot water, blocked drains, gas fitting or bathroom renovations, plus the area you service. A QR code to a quote form, booking page or reviews is useful, and most ready designs have a marked space for one.

Which card stock is best for a plumber?

Most plumbers start with Standard Business Cards: 90 x 55 mm, 300 GSM Matte, Linen, Cotton or Metallic, or 450 GSM Artboard with Velvet Laminate. For a darker look, Coloured Paper Business Cards print on 270 GSM Black or Navy, 290 GSM Kraft, and 300 GSM Forest Green, Hunter Green, Burgundy or Cream. Spot UV Business Cards add a clear gloss on selected parts of a 450 GSM Artboard with Velvet Laminate card. A design made for Standard also prints on Rounded Corner and Recycled Business Cards.

Do gasfitters need different details on a plumbing business card?

Gasfitters face the same state rules. NSW: Fair Trading includes gas fitting in its advertising rule. QLD: gas fitting comes under QBCC licensing, and business cards count as advertising. ACT: gasfitter is a construction occupation requiring licensed name and licence number. WA and SA: check with Building and Energy or Consumer and Business Services. Vic: no confirmed rule, check with VBA or Building and Plumbing Commission. Show your gasfitting licence where required and your ABN where it helps.

What do I need to provide when I order a ready plumbing business card design?

We set the details into the design and email a free PDF proof within 1 to 2 business days. Nothing prints until you approve that proof. Ready designs carry no set-up charge.

What a plumbing business card should show

Plumbing business cards have to work harder than most. A caller with water running somewhere wants the trade, the phone number and the state licence details without hunting.

  • Your name and trade: plumber, gasfitter, hot water, blocked drains and drainage, bathroom renovations or general maintenance.
  • Phone number: the first contact detail, because most urgent jobs start as a call or message.
  • State licence or registration detail: show the number your regulator requires on advertising. The wording depends on the state, covered below.
  • ABN where it helps: useful when quoting body corporates or other businesses, but not mandatory for every sole trader card.
  • Services and area: list what you actually cover and the suburbs you can reach quickly.
  • QR code: point it to a quote form, booking page or review page. Most designs here have a marked space for one.

Licence details and what your state asks for

In several states the advertising rule is tied to the construction licence. Check the current wording with the regulator before you print.

  • New South Wales: Fair Trading requires the licensee's name and number on every advertisement for plumbing, draining or gas fitting at any value.
  • Queensland: the QBCC is the licensing body for these trades and names business cards as advertising. Its rule asks for the licensed person's name, a statement that you are licensed under the QBCC Act, and the licence number.
  • ACT: under the Construction Occupations (Licensing) Act 2004, plumber, drainer and gasfitter are construction occupations, so advertising must include the registered name and number on the licence.
  • Western Australia: check with Building and Energy what your card must show.
  • South Australia: check with Consumer and Business Services what your card must show.
  • Victoria: no confirmed advertising rule for plumbers, so check with the Victorian Building Authority or Building and Plumbing Commission before printing.

For any other state or territory, call your plumbing regulator. ASIC does not require a company to put its ACN on a business card, and the ATO points to invoices and similar documents for ABN use. Showing the ABN on stationery is a good idea, but no rule was found that a sole trader must print an ABN on a card.

Choosing a card that survives the job

Plumber business cards get folded, damp and shoved into pockets, so most designs on this page start on standard business cards. The 90 x 55 mm size fits a cardholder, and the stock runs from 300 GSM Matte, Linen, Cotton or Metallic to 450 GSM Artboard with Velvet Laminate. Front and back printing is available; the four 300 GSM options come without laminate.

If you want colour with more depth, coloured paper business cards use stock such as 270 GSM Black or Navy, 290 GSM Kraft, and 300 GSM Forest Green, Hunter Green, Burgundy or Cream. Printing is in CMYK or white ink, so a dark stock can carry a bold look for drainage, gas or hot water work.

When a single detail has to jump out, spot uv business cards add a clear gloss coating to chosen areas of a 450 GSM Artboard with Velvet Laminate card. Use it on a phone number or QR code rather than the whole layout.

These designs were built for the cards above, plus Duplex, Flat Foil and Recycled options. A layout made for Standard also prints on Rounded Corner and Recycled Business Cards. If the design depends on a finish or stock such as foil, spot UV, Scodix, duplex or coloured paper, it stays on its own card, but many can also run as a Standard edition with the same layout on Standard Business Cards.

Keeping your van and site sign on brand

Make the phone number and licence details match across everything. corflute signs on a fence or front yard tell the street who is jetting the drain or renovating the bathroom. Keep the same details from your card, including the number your state regulator expects on advertising.

On the ute or van, car magnets turn parked vehicles into a local ad. Put the business name, phone number, licence number and one or two services such as hot water, blocked drains or gas fitting.

The print marketing kit for tradies applies the same details to cards, quotes, invoices and signage, so the job looks consistent from first call to final visit.
