What should I put on a lawyer business card?
Start with your name and the regulated title you actually hold, such as Solicitor, Barrister, Licensed Conveyancer, Registered Migration Agent or Notary Public. Then add the firm or chambers, your practice areas, a direct phone number and email, and the office address or floor. Finally include a booking link or QR code where the design has one. Clients read the card as: who you are, what you do, how to reach you.
Can a lawyer call themselves a specialist on a business card?
Only if the solicitor named on the card holds the relevant accreditation. The Australian Solicitors' Conduct Rules prohibit a false, misleading or deceptive impression of specialist expertise, and the accreditation belongs to the solicitor personally, never the firm. Queensland's regulator treats 'specialises in' as a claim to expertise, so write Family Lawyer or practising in family law instead. New South Wales uses Accredited Specialist (Family Law) after the solicitor's name in the accredited area only. Victoria uses Accredited Family Law Specialist. A Queensland Law Society Accredited Specialist may claim to be a specialist in that area.
Does a migration agent or an immigration lawyer need a MARN on the card?
A registered migration agent must show their MARN on business cards, and Registered Migration Agent is the registered person's title, never the firm. Since 22 March 2021, a lawyer who holds an Australian practising certificate and gives immigration assistance in connection with legal practice does not register with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority, so an immigration lawyer's card carries no MARN. If there is any doubt, check with the regulator before print.
What can a personal injury lawyer's card say in Queensland?
Under Queensland's Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002, print advertising is limited to the practitioner's and the practice's name, contact details and areas of practice. No pictures and no self-promotional statements are allowed, so a card can carry the name, the firm, personal injury law and the contact details only. New South Wales has no such ban, but the conduct rules and the Australian Consumer Law still apply.
Does a law firm business card need the liability limited line?
No. The 'Liability limited by a scheme approved under Professional Standards Legislation' line belongs on letterhead, websites, client documents and invoices, but business cards are expressly excluded. ASIC does not require a company to show its ACN on a business card, and the ATO has no rule requiring a sole trader to print an ABN on a card. When a title or registration number is unclear, check with your law society or legal services regulator before you print.
Which card suits my practice, and what do I need to provide when ordering?
Most practices choose Standard Business Cards for the familiar 90 x 55 mm size and front-and-back layout. Coloured Paper Business Cards suit black, navy, kraft or deep green stock, while Flat Foil Business Cards give a one-sided mirror-bright finish in gold, silver, rose gold, copper or holographic. If a layout is ready for Standard, the same design can be printed on Rounded Corner or Recycled cards. When ordering, provide your name, firm or chambers details, phone, email, and any licence or registration number and ABN. We place those details into the layout and send a free PDF proof before anything prints.

What lawyer business cards should show
Clients read a card as a contact sequence: who you are, what kind of lawyer they are dealing with, and the fastest way to get a consultation while a deadline is moving. These lawyer business cards serve family lawyers, barristers, conveyancers, migration agents, mediators, Justices of the Peace and in-house counsel.
- Your name and the regulated role stated accurately, such as Solicitor, Barrister, Licensed Conveyancer, Registered Migration Agent with the MARN, or Notary Public
- The firm, chambers or practice name, including the floor for barristers
- The areas of practice, from family law and criminal law to migration, conveyancing, employment or personal injury
- A direct line and email, even where the firm also runs a switchboard
- The office address or chambers floor
- A booking link or QR code for a consultation or quote, where the design includes one
Titles and claims a lawyer's card must get right
In New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia, the Legal Profession Uniform Law says only a qualified entity may engage in legal practice or represent that it can. Rule 9 of the Legal Profession Uniform General Rules 2015 protects titles such as lawyer, legal practitioner, solicitor and barrister. Western Australia joined on 1 July 2022. A card states the regulated role, not the practising certificate, so it reads Solicitor, Barrister or Australian Legal Practitioner. For barristers, the card should say Barrister or Counsel with the chambers name and floor, and SC or KC appears only for a barrister appointed senior counsel.
Under rule 36.2 of the Australian Solicitors' Conduct Rules, "accredited specialist", any derivative, and related post-nominals may be used only by a solicitor who personally holds current accreditation from the professional body; the accreditation never belongs to the firm. A card cannot imply specialist expertise when the named solicitor lacks that personal accreditation. In Queensland, because the regulator treats "specialises in" as a claim to expertise, a lawyer without personal Queensland Law Society specialist accreditation writes Family Lawyer or practising in family law. New South Wales writes Accredited Specialist (Family Law) after the solicitor's name only when the solicitor personally holds that accreditation, and only in the accredited area. Victoria writes Accredited Family Law Specialist for a solicitor who personally holds Victorian accreditation. A Queensland Law Society Accredited Specialist may claim to be a specialist in that area because the accreditation is the solicitor's own.
A registered migration agent must place the MARN on business cards, and the title belongs to the registered person, not the firm. Since 22 March 2021, a lawyer with an Australian practising certificate who gives immigration assistance in connection with legal practice does not register with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority, so an immigration lawyer's card has no MARN. In New South Wales, Licensed Conveyancer is the title of a non-lawyer licensee; solicitors cannot hold that licence. The licence number appears exactly as issued, but no rule was found requiring it on the card. Notary Public appears only when the appointment exists, by the Supreme Court of New South Wales or Victoria. A New South Wales Justice of the Peace may put JP after the name, but must not use it to advance business interests, and JP services carry no fee.
Queensland personal injury rules under the Personal Injuries Proceedings Act 2002 restrict print advertising to the practitioner's and practice's name, contact details and areas of practice, with no pictures and no self-promotional statements. A Queensland personal injury card therefore shows name, firm, personal injury law and contact details only. More broadly, rule 36.1 and the Australian Consumer Law sections 18 and 29 ban false, misleading, deceptive or offensive claims, guaranteed outcomes, and testimonials that are not genuine. Best, leading or no win no fee appear only when true and complete. The Professional Standards liability line does not go on a card, because business cards are expressly excluded from the letterhead, website and invoice requirement. ASIC does not require an ACN on business cards, envelopes or vehicles, and the ATO has no rule requiring a sole trader's ABN on one. If any title or number is uncertain, check with your law society or legal services regulator before print.
Choosing the card for law firm business cards
Most ready lawyer business cards here suit Standard Business Cards, which measure 90 x 55 mm and come in 300 GSM Matte, Linen, Cotton or Metallic, or 450 GSM Artboard with Velvet Laminate. The four 300 GSM stocks carry no laminate, while the 450 GSM option has Velvet Laminate. A layout built for that card can also be shown on Rounded Corner and Recycled cards, so you are not locked to one edge or stock.
When the paper colour matters, Coloured Paper Business Cards run on 270 GSM black or navy, 290 GSM kraft, 300 GSM forest green, hunter green, burgundy, cream and more, printed in CMYK or white ink. Flat Foil Business Cards keep a one-sided mirror-bright gold, silver, rose gold, copper or holographic foil level with the card face. Some designs built for these finishes can also be ordered as a plain Standard print of the same front and back.
How a ready design becomes your card
Open any gallery design and the product page loads with that layout and its print settings already chosen as Recommended; you can change any option. After Add to cart, enter your name, firm or chambers, phone, email, and any licence or registration number and ABN the role requires. Your details are placed into the layout, and a free PDF proof is emailed within 1 to 2 business days. The press starts only after you approve that proof. Pre-made designs have no set-up fee, and production time appears on each product page before you order. If you want another industry or card type, visit the business card designs hub.
Matching the rest of your print to the card
Keep the same trade across the matter file. Presentation Folders can hold the engagement letter, costs disclosure and the documents a client signs at a first meeting. Printed brochures for a practice area walk someone through the conveyancing steps or what to expect at a first family law meeting. The professional services print kit guide covers stationery and folders that work alongside the card.
APPROVAL BEFORE ANY PRINT
Check the title, floor and registration number on the free PDF proof. The press does not start until you sign it off.
All cards are printed in Melbourne. A ready design does not carry a set-up cost.
